I absolutely love it when clients come back to me for new photos.

Whether it’s for new headshots or for a whole new host of personal branding photos, it’s all good as they each serve a wonderful purpose for business owners, entrepreneurs, creatives and changemakers in helping them put themselves out there with more confidence and self expression.

In turn, their ideal clients and audiences are given the ability to resonate on a much deeper level with them and what they offer when they can connect with them visually seeing their photos and interacting with the in real life. This is the part that is so fulfilling for me when the two align!

So looking forward to my next visit with dear friends Peter + Philip in March. It’s like having a home away from home and will be, as always, a relaxing and rejuvenating time of great food, conversation and walks in what I like to call their ‘Enchanted Garden’. It’s their labour of love and it’ll be nice to see it coming to life again since I photographed it in May of 2023.

Lyndal is one of my many wonderful clients who comes over from Vancouver to shoot with me, and I’m just so grateful and honoured that she makes the trek to see me. This is our third shoot together and I’m certain she is going to love her new photos.

It’s Friday, and I couldn’t be happier to share this gorgeous portrait of my wonderful client, Genevieve!

I was quite moved when part way through the shoot she expressed a few joyful happy tears were shed- that beautiful combination of gratitude and recognition of self-acceptance and love. The exact kind of emotions that make what I do so fulfilling and worth while!

At this time of year, I love the magic of Christmas lights. ✨ Whether they’re twinkling on the tree or lighting up the neighborhood, there’s something so nostalgic and joyful about them. The warm glow instantly makes everything feel festive and cozy, reminding me of childhood memories and the excitement of the season.

I often get asked who inspired me to become a creative artist and the person who always comes to mind first is my grandmother, Stella.

Born in London in 1900, Stella Mackie (née Oldfield) was a talented oil-on-canvas portrait artist and a true woman ahead of her time. She put herself through art school in the 1920s by modeling for fashion magazines like British Vogue and went on to paint commissioned portraits for people and business leaders.

Stella was fiercely independent—paving her own way at a time when women had limited options, especially if they weren’t married. She separated from my grandfather when my dad was a toddler and carved out a successful career as an artist. Her determination, creativity, and strength have always inspired me.

Looking back, it’s no surprise that her legacy played a huge role in my own journey as a creative. From becoming a makeup artist in the ‘90s to a professional photographer in 2004, Stella’s influence continues to shape the work I love today.

Here are a few of my favourite portraits of Stella from the 1920s from her modelling collection, and I love how @mchmara of @splorgvision has brought one to life in a moving representation using his incredible AI skills!

I’m also excited to share The Stella Series, a collection of creative portraits directly inspired by her and in honour of her legacy that I collaborated with my beautiful and dear friend Katherine in 2015. Watch how we brought it to life in a new post coming soon!

Today, I want to talk about the power of vulnerability in relationships. Not my usual post but for some reason I feel drawn to talk about, especially as this time of year can be a sensitive one.

The word vulnerability has several meanings but is one that holds immense power when it comes to relationships.

I believe vulnerability is the foundation of love, trust, and communication and opens the door to deeper, more meaningful connections with others.

To me, vulnerability means having the courage to open your heart, even at the risk of being hurt. It’s a brave act that carries uncertainty—you never truly know how others will respond when you let your guard down. As @brenebrown beautifully said, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity.”

When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we offer others a glimpse of our true selves. It’s through this openness that people can better understand who we are and what we have to give. Often, this inspires others to do the same—they see the courage in your heart and are moved to match it with their own. In this way, vulnerability creates a mutual exchange of love, support, and authenticity.

This season, however, can be particularly challenging for many. It’s a time when emotions run high, and the pressure to put on a brave face can feel overwhelming. But I invite you to take a small step toward openness. Let your heart crack open just a little and give a piece of yourself to others—whether it’s a kind word, an honest conversation, or an act of generosity.

You never know what might come back in return. Often, it’s far more than you ever imagined. Vulnerability isn’t weakness; it’s the strength that brings us closer to others and helps us build relationships rooted in truth and love.

So this season, be brave and let yourself be vulnerable. Open your heart and watch how it inspires others to do the same. You just might discover the beauty of connection in ways you never thought possible.

Running a photography business is a dream for many creatives and I have to say that I’m very fortunate to have been in business for jsut over twenty years now!

It definitely comes with its challenges from unpredictable income to wearing many hats and juggling staying on top of your game creatively and technically, marketing and social media, client expectations and admin tasks - it can all feel very overwhelming.

One of the tools I use to organize and automate my business is @the17hats. It allows me to streamline and automate my workflows so I can focus more on what I love to do which is creating stunning images!

Whether it’s managing bookings, sending contracts or tracking finances, it’s a game-changer for me and one I can’t do without in my business. It’s also something I help other photographers and creatives get set up with so they can simplify their lives too.

Running a freelance photography business is definitely rewarding in most ways, but let’s be real—it’s not always easy.

From marketing to managing client expectations, there’s so much more to it than just taking pictures!

One of the hardest parts is the ups and downs of income. Unlike a regular paycheck, freelance work can be unpredictable and that’s why having sound marketing and financial plans for slower times is so important for long term success.

Finding your niche and standing out in a crowded market can be exhausting while keeping up with the latest technology and trends takes constant learning and a lot of heart.

And of course on top of all that, juggling shoots, editing, client meetings, and admin work with a smile on your face can feel overwhelming. But having the right tools and systems and someone on your side are total lifesavers and I’m so thankful to have those at my disposal at any given time.

I don’t get as many opportunities to photograph my boy as much anymore as he’s growing up so fast and is developing lots of creative avenues to express himself and pursue.

But he must have been one of the most photographed kids ever as I have literally thousands of images of him and I couldn’t be happier about that. So many wonderful memories of our life together so far to look back upon and remember times, places, faces and experiences.

Love this shot of him overlooking Peyto Lake, exploring his photography skills on our big trip across North America before making the move to Victoria.

Life is fleeting and every moment is a gift.

Life has a way of teaching us lessons when we need to learn them doesn’t it?

Like for me a while back, I found myself totally overwhelmed and burnt out—work, personal stuff, social plans... it all just piled up and I hit a wall, frozen. Eventually, it hit me. I hadn’t and don’t really do much for myself and more often than not I am running around trying to please or do things / be there for others. So I decided it was time to focus on me and my health and emotional well being.

This equated to small steps, like quiet walks in nature with my dog Sophie, journalling, giving time and space around my daily tasks, appointments and client work. Most importantly though it meant really listening to how I feel with the people in my life and various situations that come up and simply saying no if I want to.

It’s not easy as a highly sensitive person, but but little by little, I started feeling lighter, happier and more motivated to create and have clearer direction in how I want to live my life.

I realize this is common sense but we’re only human and sometime forget to check in with ourselves. And of course life gets busy, but taking care of ourselves can only make you stronger in the long run.

So now, I’m super excited about moving into the new year with the confidence, clarity and peace that I know my soul has been yearning for and I look forward to bringing that energy to the work and collaborations that are on their way!
